About the School
Shireland High Tech Primary is the first free school to be set up by the Collegiate Academy Trust. It's founder school, Shireland Collegiate Academy, has been rated outstanding by Ofsted three times.
Its purpose is to enable pupils to achieve beyond their expectations by providing the best technology-enabled education opportunities.
This brand new, two form entry primary school will open in 2017 starting with Pre-School, Reception and Year 1 and by 2022 will have a full complement of year groups. All teachers will be fully qualified with additional support in classrooms in the form of School Direct trainee teachers. Provision for families through Breakfast and After School Clubs will also be available.
Shireland High Tech Primary will be at the heart of our community and offers strong and effective leadership, a clear sense of purpose and direction teamed with high expectations and academic rigour. We will offer a broad and balanced curriculum that is delivered in an innovative and highly tactile way using technology.
The purpose of Shireland High Tech Primary is to enable pupils to achieve beyond their expectations by providing the best technology-enabled education opportunities.
It will serve the families and community and aim to provide an outstanding learning experience for all of its pupils using technology as a platform to enhance, engage and enable, with every pupil in Key Stage 2 receiving a device for them to use in school.
‘High-tech’ will not mean sitting in rows in front of a laptop screen all day. ‘High-tech’ will mean that learners will use technology seamlessly and creatively as a tool across the curriculum to deepen and accelerate their learning and to solve problems. It will also allow pupils and families to continue learning beyond the school walls, giving them access to online resources at any time and place. Balance is key. Our aim is that pupils will leave Shireland High Tech Primary as well-rounded, highly educated and ambitious children who are fully equipped with essential skills for their future.
The founder academy, its Executive Principal, Sir Mark Grundy and the Principal Designate of Shireland High Tech Primary, Kirsty Tonks have national reputations in harnessing technology for school improvement and the primary school will draw upon this experience to ensure the very best experiences and learning opportunities it can provide.
Shireland High Tech primary will also benefit from the relationships with educational technology companies such as Microsoft, Discovery Education and Tute, enabling them to keep at the cutting edge of educational technology developments and ensuring the very best can be used by staff, pupils and families to further improve learning.
Kirsty Tonks is our Principal Designate. She has:-
• Over 20 years of teaching experience in both Primary and Secondary Schools (5 years in Walsall) having taught across all age phases from Reception to Year 6 and up to Post 16.

Shireland High Tech Primary is a 4-11 primary school established via the free school programme. It aims to provide a high quality education for local children and prepare them for secondary school and beyond in a safe and welcoming environment. Our inclusive admissions process will at all times be open, transparent and fair, and will meet the requirements of the National Schools Admissions Code, the Appeals Code and admissions legislation.
The published admission number is 60 places in each year of entry into Reception from September 2017. The school will admit up to this number each year to two Reception classes and when full the school will have 420 pupils on roll. There will also be 52 places in our pre-school; 26 in the morning and 26 in the afternoon.
The Free school will accordingly admit this number of pupils each year if there are sufficient applications. Where fewer applicants than the published admission number(s) for the relevant year group are received, the Academy Trust will offer places at the free school to all those who have applied.
